Arise Chicago Worker Center (ACWC) has been approved for $5,000 to promote economic justice and self development. Arise Chicago is an affiliate in the national Interfaith Worker Justice network. Arise Chicago was begun in 1991 by Northern Illinois Conference Bishop Jesse Dewitt, a monsignor and a rabbi. The current executive director is an ordained member of the conference.
ACWC, established in 2002, is a resource for workers to learn about their rights and to organize for better workplace conditions. ACWC provides in community centers and churches weekly, free worker-rights workshops in Spanish, Polish and English. ACWC educates workers on how to respond to and prevent labor-law infractions. ACWC is participating in a pilot program with the U.S. Dept. of Labor to conduct sweeps uncovering labor abuses across industries.
